Barodabri: The Untamed Edge of Dooars

Barodabri is the sort of place that travel brochures often forget, but travellers never do. Whether you're a solo explorer looking for that raw connection with nature, a Bengali family hunting for an affordable yet immersive getaway, or a group of friends wanting both chill and thrill, this lesser-known destination has something for everyone.

Barodabri is located on the fringes of the Chilapata Forest in the Alipurduar District of West Bengal. It sits peacefully near the Indo-Bhutan border, offering a blend of rich forest biodiversity and glimpses into local tribal cultures like the Rabhas and Bodos. The region lies just a few kilometres off NH31, making it well-connected yet wonderfully isolated from the chaos of mainstream tourism.

The Bania River flows gently nearby, often accompanied by herds of elephants or deer crossing at dawn or dusk. It’s also within striking distance of Jaldapara National Park and the Buxa Tiger Reserve, creating a perfect triangle of wilderness.

How to Reach Barodabri

Reaching Barodabri is as much a joy as the stay itself. If you're flying in, the nearest airport is Bagdogra, about 145 kilometres away. From the airport, a scenic drive through tea estates and forest corridors takes around four hours. Trains are more convenient for many travellers—the Hasimara railway station is the closest, just 12 kilometres away, while Alipurduar Junction, about 25 kilometres distant, offers better connectivity and more options.

From either station, taxis and shared jeeps are readily available. You can ask our sister concern Humro Cars (9733052020) to arrange a vehicle for you, too. The last leg of the journey winds through sal and teak forests, often giving you your first sighting of wild peacocks or barking deer.

What to See in and Around Barodabri

Chilapata Forest is the crown jewel here. Spread across dense woodlands that once connected Buxa with Jaldapara, this forest is home to leopards, wild boars, various species of deer, and a rich avian population. Jungle safaris can be arranged through local forest offices or homestay operators. You’ll be riding through tall sal trees that form cathedral-like arches overhead—a haunting, sacred silence broken only by birdsong or the cracking of twigs under hooves or paws.

One of the most intriguing sites is the Nalraja Garh, or the fort of the Nal Kings. Deep inside the forest, these moss-covered ruins date back to the Gupta period. Though little is left standing, the atmosphere makes up for it. Local folklore and guide stories breathe life into the stones, telling tales of forgotten kings, forest spirits, and ancient battles.

Nearby Attractions

The strategic location of Barodabri means several major attractions are just a short drive away. Jaldapara National Park, famous for its Indian one-horned rhinoceroses, is about 20 kilometres away. Safaris here offer a chance to see elephants, bison, and a variety of deer species. Buxa Tiger Reserve and the scenic Buxa Fort are about 45 kilometres from Barodabri, offering a deeper trek into wild terrain.

Phuentsholing, the Bhutanese border town, lies only 35 kilometres away. A half-day trip can give you a taste of Bhutanese culture and cuisine without a visa, provided you remain within designated areas.

Totopara, the unique tribal village of the Toto people, is around 25 kilometres away. Visiting this isolated community offers insights into a rare and ancient way of life that is fiercely preserved.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Barodabri enjoys a subtropical climate with high humidity during monsoons and pleasantly cool winters. Summers are warm but tolerable due to the surrounding forests. The monsoon, from June to September, transforms the landscape into an emerald sea, but safaris can be disrupted due to road conditions.

The best time to visit is from October to early April. This is when the forest is alive with wildlife movement, the skies are clear, and the nights are perfect for bonfires and storytelling. Winters here are especially pleasant and ideal for family holidays and photography trips.
