Kalipur Eco Village

Kalipur Eco Village is a haven for those who crave a break from city chaos and want to reconnect with the wild. It sits in the northern part of West Bengal, surrounded by the subtropical forests of Gorumara National Park. It’s about 77 kilometres from Siliguri, the gateway to Northeast India, and lies along the floodplains of the Murti and Jaldhaka rivers. The village is a model of eco-tourism, blending rustic charm with conservation efforts. Managed by the Jalpaiguri Forest Division II, it’s designed to let you experience the wilderness without leaving a heavy footprint. The proximity to the Medla Watchtower, just 500 meters away, makes it a prime spot for wildlife sightings, offering a front-row seat to the park’s vibrant ecosystem.

Getting There

The nearest airport is Bagdogra, about 85 kilometres away, a scenic two-hour drive through tea gardens and rolling hills. The closest station is Chalsa, but since not all major trains stop there, New Mal Junction in Malbazar is a better bet, just 45 minutes away by cab.

Attractions

The Medla Watchtower is the star, offering views of rhinos, bison, and elephants roaming the grasslands. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of Mount Kanchenjunga from here. Gorumara National Park, home to one-horned rhinos, leopards, and over 193 bird species, is the main draw. Birdwatchers, bring your binoculars—peacocks, hornbills, and serpent eagles are practically neighbours here.

If you’re curious about tea, a visit to the nearby Jadavpur Tea Estate offers a peek into Dooars’ tea-making magic.

Beyond Kalipur, the Dooars region is brimming with gems. Jhalung, 30 kilometres away, is a quaint township by the Jaldhaka River, about a 45-minute drive, known for its hydroelectric project and serene vibes. Bindu, another 22 kilometres from Jhalung, marks the India-Bhutan border and is perfect for a day trip, roughly an hour’s drive. Samsing and Suntaleykhola, both within an hour’s reach, offer stunning views of tea gardens and forests. Closer to home, the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary, just a short drive north, is an elephant haven, while Murti village, along the river, is ideal for a peaceful picnic.
