Batabari

Tucked between towering sal forests and tea estates that stretch to the horizon, Batabari is one of those places where nature quietly calls you in and never quite lets go. Located close to the Gorumara National Park forests of the Dooars region of North Bengal, Batabari is a peaceful hamlet that is home to several hotels and resorts. For travellers in search of a tour of Gorumara, Batabari can be an ideal base for further exploration. This is where the pace of life slows, the sound of cicadas fills the afternoon silence, and you are never too far from the sight of a grazing bison or the dance of a hornbill.

Where Exactly is Batabari?

Batabari is located in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, nestled in the eastern Himalayan foothills. It falls within the Chalsa range and is bordered by the famous Murti River and the vast Gorumara forest. Just about 80 kilometres from Siliguri, this little village is part of the larger Dooars belt—an area known for its biodiverse forests, rich tribal culture, and some of the most scenic drives in eastern India.

If you are coming from the Chalsa side, Batabari is the village about 8 km from the Chalsa crossing. Drive on for another couple of kilometres to reach the dense forests of Gorumara National Park. Batabari’s proximity to Gorumara National Park, Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary, and several forest villages makes it a strategic and picturesque location to set up camp for multiple adventures.

How to Reach Batabari

The nearest airport is Bagdogra, as it is for the whole of Dooars. Bagdogra is about 85 kilometres away and takes about 1.5 hours to reach. For those who prefer the rhythm of the rails, New Mal Junction is the closest railway station, just 18 kilometres away.

Driving from Siliguri is a pleasure in itself. You can come here either through the Sevoke hills or via Gajoldoba. Both routes offer mesmerising forest and tea garden views on the way.

Attractions in and Around Batabari

The crown jewel of Batabari’s location is its closeness to Gorumara National Park. This protected forest is a treasure trove of wildlife, including Indian one-horned rhinoceroses, elephants, leopards, gaurs, and an astonishing variety of birds. Jungle safaris, typically arranged from the nearby Lataguri or Chalsa forest range offices, can be accessed via Batabari with ease.

A short walk or drive from most stays takes you to the Murti River. Here, on a lazy afternoon, you can perch on a boulder and watch the sunlight play with the river currents, or dip your feet while listening to birdsong. The riverbanks are clean and quiet, offering the perfect setting for a family picnic or romantic escape.

Also close by is the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary, just around 12 kilometres away. It is home to wild elephants, sambar deer, and a vibrant avian population that excites every birdwatcher worth their binoculars.
