Lataguri

Two decades ago, Lataguri was just another quiet forest village, known mostly for its timber mills and roadside stalls. Today, it's the tourism capital of Dooars, and the entry point to Gorumara National Park, one of India’s richest wildlife habitats in the Himalayan foothills.

What makes Lataguri stand out isn’t just the forest next door—it’s the infrastructure, accessibility, and sheer number of nature-centric experiences it offers. Whether you're planning a jungle safari, a weekend escape, or a longer holiday into the wild heart of Bengal, Lataguri is where your journey begins.

From Sawmills to Safari Town – A Short History of Lataguri

During the 1980s and early 90s, North Bengal’s economy thrived on timber trade, and Lataguri was dotted with sawmills supplying wood across the region. But as environmental regulations tightened and forest conservation took priority, most of these mills shut down. That’s when tourism found its moment.

With the foresight of local forest officers and travel entrepreneurs, eco-tourism was introduced in Gorumara in the late 1990s. The result? A small village transformed into the tourism nerve centre of Western Dooars.

Today, Lataguri has over a hundred resorts and eco-lodges, a nature interpretation centre, a thriving market, and the only official entry point to Gorumara’s jungle safaris. From backpackers to families, birdwatchers to honeymooners—Lataguri caters to them all.

Why Visit Lataguri?

The biggest reason to visit Lataguri is its proximity to Gorumara National Park, a protected forest known for frequent wildlife sightings, especially the Asiatic one-horned rhinoceros, Indian Bison (Gaur), and elephants. Unlike larger forests where sightings can be rare and safaris can feel long and unfruitful, Gorumara offers a compact, high-sighting environment, making it a favourite among wildlife lovers and first-time safari-goers.

But there's more:

  • Most jungle safaris in Gorumara originate from Lataguri, where you’ll find the forest range office, jeep counters, permits, and guides.

  • It’s also the base for exploring other nearby tourist destinations like Jhalong, Bindu, Samsing, and Jaldhaka—all within a short scenic drive.

  • Weekend travellers from Siliguri find Lataguri a perfect escape—close enough to reach quickly, wild enough to feel far away.

Add to that the local culture, tribal dances, tea gardens, riverside walks, and a relaxed forest-town vibe—Lataguri is more than just a launchpad to the forest. It’s a destination in itself.

Forest Safari in Lataguri – Gorumara’s Main Attraction

Jeep safaris inside Gorumara National Park are the highlight of any trip to Lataguri. Conducted twice daily—early morning and late afternoon—these safaris take you into the dense sal forests, grasslands, and waterholes where wildlife sightings are frequent and thrilling.

There are multiple watchtowers and safari routes inside the park:

  • Jatraprasad Watchtower – Named after a legendary forest elephant, this is one of the best places to spot rhinos and elephants.

  • Medla Watchtower – Ideal for cultural exposure, often includes tribal dance performances.

  • Chukchuki Watchtower – Great for birdwatchers.

  • Chapramari Watchtower – Though part of a different reserve, it’s nearby and offers equally rewarding forest views.

Safari bookings must be done in advance, and permits are issued only from Lataguri. Safari jeeps are officially regulated, and bookings can fill up fast during holidays and winter months.

Where Is Lataguri?

Lataguri is located in the heart of Western Dooars, on National Highway 717, exactly midway between Chalsa (to the north) and Maynaguri (to the south). This makes it easily accessible from all corners of North Bengal and even Southern Bengal.

  • Distance from Bagdogra Airport – 70 km (2 hours)

  • Distance from Malbazar – 30 km (40 minutes)

While Lataguri has its small rail station, it’s not well-connected. The recommended railheads are NJP (for most tourists) and Malbazar (for South Bengal travellers).
